PSHE/RSE

Personal, Social, health and economic education / Relationships and Sex education

Through PSHE / RSE education learners develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work.

PSHE / RSE matters greatly and positively impacts on both academic attainment and learners' wellbeing, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged. The allocated PSHE learning session 5 times supports the whole school curriculum, while also looking at life long learning and skill acquisition. It covers a broad range of topics of particular relevance and concern to young people today.

Our PSHE curriculum is focused around our core values of Trust, Respect, Equity and Excellence. PSHE education helps learners to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage life’s challenges and make the most of life’s opportunities. An effective PSHE programme can also tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations, and improve the life chances of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged learners. Alongside the PSHE curriculum we also support the sessions with whole school assemblies which take place once a week.

At Honywood we believe in the education of the whole child, so alongside our PSHE curriculum, we offer our learners the opportunity to complete their 'TREE Awards' which consist of challenges centred around our core values, and aimed at developing their character. In Cohort 7, they begin to work on attaining their Bronze Award, and this carries through to cohorts 8, 9 and 10 where they work towards their Silver and Gold Award. These challenges are planned and discussed in Learning Session 5 time, but the onus is on the learner to take the initiative to complete challenges in their own time and in the community. By the time learners have achieved the Gold Award they will have engaged in a plethora of experiences which have been specifically selected to strengthen their intellect, sense of morality, and civic duty.

Each cohort has a dedicated session per week to promote the Love of Reading to DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) and also DEAL (Drop Everything And Listen).

Our PSHE Curriculum aims to develop skills and attributes such as resilience, self-esteem, risk-management, team working and critical thinking. These are covered through topics such as mental health and wellbeing, physical health, first aid and learning about healthy relationships and sex. The curriculum is designed where similar topic areas are covered from Cohrt 7- 11 but are covered in greater depth and understanding with age appropriate resources. This gives the learners the opportunity to build upon prior knowledge and support them in new or challenging situations.

PSHE at Honywood gives learners the ability to embrace the challenges of creating a happy and successful adult life. Learners will build upon their knowledge that will enable them to make informed decisions about their wellbeing, health and relationships and to build their self-efficacy.  Learners can also put this knowledge into practice as they develop the capacity to make sound decisions when facing risks, challenges and complex contexts.  Everyone faces difficult situations in their lives.  Through PSHE we can support our learners to develop resilience, to know how and when to ask for help, and to know where to access external agencies for support.
